Voted Best School in the World by former students.

This weekend I spent time with my very troubled nephew who spends his life in this school.  It made me wonder why some people chose this school over the other schools.  There are many teachers in life. We don't have to look to far to find them. Sometimes the decisions we make become our teachers.

As an emerging leader, I am a student of one or the other school. It's really up to me whether I want to learn the lesson the easy way or the hard way. Either way, the lesson will be learned.  I am the apprentice.  The student who is trying to become the leader.

Do you ever wonder why people repeat the same mistakes over and over again? It's because they are enrolled in the School of Hard Knocks. They haven't gotten the lesson yet and have to repeat the course until they get it right.  If you noticed in my offerings of degrees I listed PhD.  The reason why is because for some people it takes them years to finally get it.  They don't get ABD, they get the PhD once they finally get it and break out of the vicious patterns they have lived in for years. The good news is that once you get it, you got it.  Some people just have to learn by doing.

The sad reality is that I've been a former student of the School of Hard Knocks. And shamefully enough, every once in a while, I sign up for another course.  I hope to some day graduate indefinately, but I doubt that some day is anywhere near. Dean of Hard Knocks, please keep my enrollment status open. I have a feeling I may be enrolling again soon. :)

I deal with people/patients who sign up for the school of hard knocks all the time and there is no reason that they should be "enrolled." I hope your nephew is okay though. It's tough to see family like that but you're seem to be setting a good example for him. :)

You painted a very vivid picture of the school. We would so like to keep our loved ones from enrolling.

Rosa,

Life is full of students that are "enrolled" - I agree...but, when the day comes for them to graduate, move on with their lives, and for the first time live a life full of given purpose...was it all not worth it? Sometimes the greatest lessons we learn are not from good times, happy places, and positive environments...it is from the harsh, the cold, the dark and gloomy places that really move us, teach us, and challenge us to go farther than anyone ever anticipated!I know and have had to face difficult and dark places, but those times and places made me the person I am today. Without that I am not sure who I would be! Trust and have faith - you are being a model and inspiration for many!

Been there - have the T-shirt(s)!
Sometimes we have to repeat the lessons so not to make the same mistakes. I talk to some students and they seem to understand and learn from their vicissitudes. While others, well, let's just say they perpetually will stay in the same place until they are determined to get out of the same rut.
As a cohort, I think it is vital for us to always encourage one another in this journey we are on.
